A consistent rule within the SAP universe is that every 4 to 5 years a customer will have to expend time and budget performing some type of SAP Upgrade. CIO’s will remember that when they moved to SAP ECC they were told they would never have to upgrade again !
The reality is that SAP tech is constantly evolving and you simply can’t second guess the next major jump in must have innovation driving business value, necessitating some form of major intervention over a four year term.
At the same time the quickening pace of industry and tech change (singularity) means SAP S/4HANA is evolving at a pace of change 🚀 that can only be consumed by customers on SAPs S/4 private or public cloud .
Some would counter that the move to the Cloud or Software as a solution will negate the need for major tech upgrades, but the reality is there will always be something……. Whether it’s the core ERP solution, data fabric or wider enterprise architecture.

So the current crop of early adopter SAP S/4HANA customers are now facing a highly complex set of upgrade scenarios:
1) A tech and functional upgrade which depending on the utilisation of new functionality will be a significant business change programme.
2) At some point there is a need to sign up to SAP RISE and migrate from on premise S/4 (including hyper-scaler cloud) to S/4 Private Cloud edition.
3) Replacing compatibility packs and other legacy SAP applications with standard SAP functionality (clean core) new SAP applications such as HCM for S/4 or new plug and play third party cloud applications. (Composable ERP).
As well as organisational change across the business domains impacted, ICT will be significantly impacted in terms of services and organisation structure and we recommend adding an ICT change workstream to your upgrade project.
