SAP’S BIGGEST AI ASSET IS NOT JOULE - It is the legacy customer base.
Thousands of organisations have spent decades building their businesses around SAP.
Their ECC, BW and early S/4HANA estates contain something most AI companies would kill for: structured processes, transactional history, financial truth, controls, relationships and corporate memory.
That is not technical debt. It is an extraordinary foundation for enterprise AI.
So much so that SAP are now recognising this with their focus upon corporate memory locked into the legacy SAP world.
Yet customers are still being told they must replace the core before they can innovate. Spend several years migrating, clean everything up, reach the approved destination and then, finally, start creating AI value.
That logic is backwards.
AI needs the process knowledge and data already sitting inside the estate. Destroying, simplifying or badly migrating that foundation could remove the very context that makes enterprise AI valuable.
SAP appears to understand this. Selected Joule and AI capabilities are being opened to ECC and on-premise and legacy S/4HANA customers that make the required cloud commitment. (There is no free vend and customers shouldn't expect SAP to give away the crown jewels for free).
The direction is clear.
AI will increasingly wrap around existing SAP estates, using agents and composable services to understand, automate and improve processes without waiting for a complete platform replacement.
That is the real opportunity for SAP.
Upcycle the installed base. Unlock its data. Protect its corporate memory. Let customers experiment safely and create value now.
Some customers should move to S/4HANA. But migration is not the prerequisite for every useful idea, and it certainly is not the strategy.
Joule may be the product.
The customer base is the asset.
