“Its time to Upgrade SAP”, the words no CIO wants to hear !

The fear is palatable, like a horror movie, the SAP upgrade is back.

Many CIOs and CFO’s dread a SAP upgrade, they are not cheap or quick and come with a level of operational risk.

A SAP upgrade is more than a code uplift, it could impact your legacy developments, it will add risk to your integration with third parties and other IT systems, and it will certainly change the way the business currently use SAP.

It will be seen by the business as an opportunity to leverage new functionality to drive business value. Adoption could leverage RPA, SAC machine learning analytics, SAP Cloud solutions to support new business models and micro services from the Business Technology Platform BTP.

IT can also use the upgrade as an opportunity to move to a hyper scaler cloud platform, start to develop a data lake strategy, shift collaboration tooling and further automate application management support.

In short a SAP upgrade is a business change project, requiring a level of business change finesse.

A SAP upgrade will impact not just IT, but the wider service delivery organisation supporting the SAP operating model and the lines of business using SAP.

If not managed correctly a SAP upgrade will impose a change freeze upon the business and cause a level of operational disruption not in proportion to the actual complexity of the project.

A SAP upgrade will necessitate a formal project structure and governance, it will require a PID, scope will need to be defined, impact assessed, changes tested and BAU regression tested and colleagues trained. The business will have an obligation to support the upgrade, the level of support will depend upon the output of the impact assessment.
