The deadline for switching from legacy SAP ECC6 to SAP S/4HANA is 31st December 2027.
Between 2023 and 2027 there will be a tsunami of SAP migration programmes, but there is insufficient capacity or capability in the SAP ecosystem to support them all (Gartner).
Currently 70% of ECC customers have not migrated, the number of companies starting their ramp up still remains low. Even when subtract those that will take up the option of a risky 3 year maintenance extension, there remains a tidal wave of SAP migration programmes forming.
Any form of SAP ECC migration to SAP S/4 remains complex, it is not a straight forward lift and shift upgrade as many SAP customers have experienced in the past with R/3 to ECC migrations.
In many instances there is not a one to one mapping of ECC to S/4. There will be elements of greenfield, there will be significant changes to the integration landscape if a PO migration to CPI is required and whatever flavour of migration you select there will be a large business change dependency.
The risk is that the SAP ecosystem simply cannot sustain the volume of migration programmes, there is already a shortage of SAP resource with many inflight programmes experiencing resourcing dependency conflicts.
A second persistent risk is that the SAP System Integrator megaliths and generalist consultancies simply don’t understand SAP’s direction and the disruptive emergence of Composable ERP.
SAP is reshaping its product value proposition and how SAP S/4HANA can be consumed by customers. This is Leading to the wrong SAP S/4HANA adoption strategy and migration path being selected.
